It is a great responsibility as well as a great honor to be able to serve you as the president of NNS. When I first moved to Nebraska with my family from Chicago, I immediately became very impressed with the NNS. I noticed that it was functioning like a big happy family to all Nepalese and friends of Nepalese in this community. I quickly realized that this society really belongs to all of us in the community. It was a heartfelt connection that rarely exists in other similar Nepalese society in other parts of US these days. It was not an organization of a few affluent and elite getting together pretending to represent the whole community but truly belonged to everyone. As I started attending the cultural programs organized by NNS, I was held spellbound by the talent of the dancers and singers in our community. I was greatly impressed with how the board members were working hard to make sure everyone visiting our programs was having a great time. This type of effort was very encouraging to everyone and I saw volunteers all eager to contribute all they can to help and share the collective success.
I still remember the day when I was talking to one of the very active executive team member about a performance that was really amazing. As I was praising that particular dance item to the team member, he seemed very happy to hear about the success of the program. It was only a while later, I realized that he was not able to view most of the program himself as he was at the gate greeting the guests and helping them to make sure everyone had a great time. It was this kind of dedication and selfless service that was able touch the hearts and minds of the whole community. It was this kind of indebtedness that encouraged me to contribute something to the society myself. It is with this same spirit that I have accepted the responsibility to serve the community as the board president. It is a great responsibility and a difficult job to maintain the standard of service that has been established by our previous board members, founding members, trustees and presidents. At the same time, I am confident that we will definitely be able to move forward and achieve great things for the whole community if we come together and work for the common goal. I am very proud to be a member of this big family of Nepalese and friends of Nepalese in Nebraska. Our family is growing rapidly in size but the family ties have been growing stronger than ever before. I will consider myself successful only when we know that this sense of belonging is shared by everyone in our community and when everyone in our society feels included in our common effort. I am very fortunate to have people with exceptional dedication and commitment in our executive board but I need help and suggestion from all of you to be able to advance our objective.

Thank you very much.

Free Health Clinic Details here
Share

We are planning to establish a free health clinic in our community. Initially, it will be a health education and advice clinic. It will be scheduled every other weekend and will be located at the student's center in UNO. Our clinic will be staffed by voluntary Physicians in our community and will be free of charge and open to all. Due to legal, registration and documentation costs, no prescription for drugs will be provided. The focus of the clinic will be patient education, explanation of diagnosis and conditions, interpretation of laboratory data, counseling about prevention of complication from chronic medical conditions and advice for appropriate treatment and procedures.Dr.Sapkota will be immediately available to start the clinic and we hope to recruit other licensed physicians in our Nepalese community to join us in this effort.

Dr. Sapkota is board certified in Internal medicine by ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) and he is licensed to practice medicine by the Nebraska state health and human services professional regulation division. He works full time as a Hospitalist and does not work outside the hospital. This is a complete voluntary endeavor.

This clinic will be most useful for the following persons:

1. Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic lung disease, high cholesterol, kidney disease and other chronic medical conditions that need long term treatment and preventive measures.

2. People concerned about chronic medical problems and want interpretation and advice regarding their cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar etc.

3. People with long standing problems that are not sure if they need further testing to look for any possible serious cause for their symptoms.

4. Anyone with long standing health concern that is reluctant to seek medical help because of cost or insurance concerns.

This clinic is not for the following persons:

1. Child, pregnant women, and anyone with recent surgery.

2. Anyone with urgent or emergent problem that needs quick access to medical care. You need to call 911 and ask for an ambulance for prompt testing and treatment of these conditions.

 Appointments:

1. Appointments will be scheduled through e-mail on a first come first serve basis. Please e-mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and we will give you our first available date. All visits will be confidential and no one else will have any information about your problem except the doctor that you are visiting.

2. Please bring the following items during your visit:

I. Any prescription and over the counter medication that you are taking. (Bring the actual pill bottle)

II. Any medical records and lab tests that you had in the past. (You can ask the hospital or clinic where you had these tests to give you a complete copy of your medical record; they have to give it you by law). We would also like to invite other physicians in our community to contact us to join us and expand our services.

Thank you

Donor appreciation
So, what is the difference between a donor and a sponsor? Both donors and sponsors give away money, food, clothing, gift cards, free dinners, and free services to the group or charity of their choice. But the fundamental difference between these two groups is their motive behind the giving. For sponsors, the motive is clear and easy to understand. They give away things to spread their good name in order to build a reputation for their business or their brand. Their hope is that the goodwill they earn will encourage their consumers to remain loyal to their goods or services. Whenever sponsors make a contribution to your community, you are grateful for their service but understand that they would be grateful to you too if you buy their product. It is therefore easy to understand their mind and easy to return the favor if you wish to.               But, things are a little bit different with donors. If you think about it, why would you give away your hard earned money to some organization? We all came to this county to have a better life. We all work hard to make money to feed our family here and send some money back home to help those family members that are still there. If you are still a student and struggling to make enough money to cover your college fees, the idea of giving away money to an organization may sound crazy to you and rightly so. But, you may think differently in the future. With your hard work, you will start climbing up the ladder of American Dream and gradually you will realize that you have come a long way. When you are no longer struggling to make ends meet, you will start thinking about your life here and only then you will realize what you are missing. Now, when you have children, if you are no longer struggling to provide for yourself, you will start to think about their future. Well, then you may realize that there are certain things that you wish your children would learn that are not taught in their school. You wish your children would understand your language and you wish they would not be ashamed of your ethnic food or your foreign accent. You wish your children would want to visit and play with their grand parents back in Nepal. You wish your children embrace your faith in your God and not ridicule you for worshipping stone. At that point you realize that you cannot fulfill these wishes by yourself. You need people who think like you to get together and form a community that believes in these common values. Only then you are willing to sacrifice your time and even your hard earned money to promote this common goal that is bigger than you and your immediate family. This is the motivation behind the volunteerism and charitable giving. We are fortunate have people in our community who have the wisdom to think about these matters and have a heart big enough to part with their hard earned money for the common goals. If you look around, you will see how beautiful our community is. We see children of Nepali parents born and raised in the USA getting together to celebrate Saraswati Puja and eager to learn how to read and write in Nepali. We see teenagers that grew up here eager to perform a folk Nepali dance in front of a big audience of Nepali community. We see middle school kids eager to dress up in traditional Nepali dress without being ridiculed by their friends. We see children who visited Nepal and wrote article about how fortunate they were to have learnt their language to be able to communicate with their relatives in Nepal. None of these would have been possible without the contribution from our donors and volunteers. Now, we know why our donors donate to our community. Let’s think about what they want in return. The simple answer is- nothing; Nothing other than the satisfaction that our entire common goal will have a better chance of being fulfilled because of their contribution. The better question would be "what can we give our donors in return for their sacrifice". Let’s all think about that. These are selfless people who are happy to give and expect nothing in return. The best we can do for them is to honor them and to acknowledge their contribution. That is exactly what we are planning to do with our new NNS team. We will devote this whole section of our website to honor them. We will make it a culture to acknowledge them during each and every cultural program we host. Above all, we will thank them from the bottom of our heart for their contribution. Thank you very much. New NNS team
